Miami-Dade Marine Patrol Increases Presence for Memorial Day Weekend

MIAMI, FL – The Miami-Dade Police Department’s Marine Patrol Unit has announced an increased presence on local waterways throughout the Memorial Day weekend, anticipating a surge in boating activity. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of all boaters and enforce maritime laws during one of the busiest boating weekends of the year.

Authorities will be focusing on key safety measures, including checking for adequate safety equipment such as life jackets, flares, and fire extinguishers. They will also be strictly enforcing regulations regarding boating under the influence (BUI) and reckless operation of vessels.

“Our priority is to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beautiful waters of Miami-Dade County safely,” stated Officer Maria Rodriguez of the Marine Patrol Unit during a press conference. “We urge all boaters to be responsible, wear their life jackets, and designate a sober operator.”

The increased patrols will cover popular boating areas, including Biscayne Bay, the Intracoastal Waterway, and offshore waters. Officers will be conducting random safety stops and responding to calls for assistance.

The announcement comes after a series of boating accidents in recent years that have highlighted the importance of safe boating practices. Factors such as speeding, inexperience, and alcohol consumption have been identified as major contributors to these incidents.

The Marine Patrol Unit is also reminding boaters to be aware of weather conditions, file a float plan, and ensure their vessels are properly maintained before heading out on the water. They are also emphasizing the importance of knowing local boating regulations and adhering to no-wake zones.

“Education and awareness are key to preventing boating accidents,” added Officer Rodriguez. “We encourage everyone to take a boating safety course and to always prioritize safety while on the water.”

Boaters who are found to be operating under the influence or engaging in reckless behavior will face strict penalties, including fines, arrest, and the suspension of their boating privileges.

The Miami-Dade Police Department urges the public to report any unsafe boating activity by contacting the Marine Patrol Unit or calling 911 in case of an emergency. They hope that a strong law enforcement presence and increased boater awareness will lead to a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend on the water for everyone.
